The [Astros hired Randy Flores as general manager Friday night](https://www.crawfordboxreport.com/astros-hire-randy-flores-general-manager/), ending a search that began when Dana Brown left in August. Owner Jim Crane announced the move; Flores is the 15th GM in franchise history, [per MLB.com's Brian McTaggart](https://x.com/brianmctaggart/status/2116324272314462332?ref=crawfordboxreport.com). For the full candidate timeline, see our [GM search tracker](https://www.crawfordboxreport.com/astros-gm-search-josh-barfield-and-randy-flores-join-matt-kleine-among-outside-candidates/).

## The St. Louis record

Flores has run Cardinals amateur scouting since [Aug. 28, 2015](https://www.mlb.com/cardinals/team/front-office/randy-flores?ref=crawfordboxreport.com), when the club made him director of scouting, and was promoted to assistant general manager on Nov. 27, 2018, [per the Cardinals' front-office bio](https://www.mlb.com/cardinals/team/front-office/randy-flores?ref=crawfordboxreport.com). Nightengale wrote Friday that he spent the past eight years as AGM of amateur and pro acquisition, [on X](https://x.com/BNightengale/status/2116324605560582517?ref=crawfordboxreport.com). A FanGraphs Q&A in 2023 described drafts under his watch as productive even when St. Louis rarely picked high, [per David Laurila](https://blogs.fangraphs.com/cardinals-scouting-director-randy-flores-on-drafting-the-teams-top-prospects/?ref=crawfordboxreport.com).

The 2020 draft is the clearest verified showcase. With Flores as assistant GM and scouting director, St. Louis took high schoolers Jordan Walker (first round, 21st overall), Masyn Winn and Tink Hence, plus Alec Burleson, with its first four picks in a shortened five-round draft, [per MLB.com's John Denton](https://www.mlb.com/news/cardinals-2020-mlb-draft-proves-key?ref=crawfordboxreport.com) and [Baseball Reference](https://www.baseball-reference.com/draft/?team%5FID=STL&year%5FID=2020&draft%5Ftype=junreg&query%5Ftype=franch%5Fyear&ref=crawfordboxreport.com). Looking back on that class, Flores told Denton: "Looking back, those three players \[Walker, Winn and Hence\] wouldn't have been available where we got them in most years. There was a lot of preparation, some luck and a willingness to make a bet in the face of risk that seems to be paying dividends."

In 2024, with the Cardinals' highest pick since 1998, Flores' department selected shortstop JJ Wetherholt seventh overall out of West Virginia. "JJ is ready to begin playing and we're ready to start his on-boarding process," Flores said in the [club's draft release](https://www.mlb.com/press-release/cardinals-select-jj-wetherholt-with-7th-overall-pick-of-2024-mlb-draft?ref=crawfordboxreport.com).

## What it means for Houston

The club said it would hire a GM before replacing Joe Espada, whose contract was not renewed after three seasons, [per MLB.com](https://www.mlb.com/news/astros-general-manager-candidates?ref=crawfordboxreport.com). That manager search can now start in earnest. Free agency opens Monday, and the GM Meetings are the following week in Las Vegas, [per McTaggart's Friday search update](https://www.mlb.com/news/astros-general-manager-search-update?ref=crawfordboxreport.com). Houston wanted a GM in place before those meetings, [per MLB.com](https://www.mlb.com/news/astros-general-manager-candidates?ref=crawfordboxreport.com). It now has one with a short runway into both calendars.

In the team's release, quoted by [MLB Trade Rumors](https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2026/10/astros-hire-randy-flores-as-general-manager.html?ref=crawfordboxreport.com), Crane said: "Randy has had a huge impact on the Cardinals over the last 10 seasons. Throughout the entire interview process, we've been thoroughly impressed with Randy and with his background in scouting and player acquisition. We're happy to welcome Randy and his family to the Astros and we can't wait to get to work on bringing another championship to Houston." Flores and Crane are scheduled to meet the media Monday at 10 a.m. CT at Daikin Park, [per the Astros' announcement graphic posted Friday](https://x.com/astros/status/2116323501280014791?ref=crawfordboxreport.com) and [Mark Berman](https://x.com/MarkBerman%5F/status/2116324162507874754?ref=crawfordboxreport.com).

## Reaction tonight

Jose de Jesus Ortiz [wrote](https://x.com/OrtizKicks/status/2116324474467574266?ref=crawfordboxreport.com): "Randy Flores, who has stocked the Cardinals' farm system full of talent, has been hired as the Astros' new GM."

Bob Nightengale, after confirming the hire, [added](https://x.com/BNightengale/status/2116326766415675785?ref=crawfordboxreport.com): "Now that former Cardinals assistant GM Randy Flores is the Houston Astros GM, Cardinals coaches Daniel Descalso and Jon Jay are natural candidates for their managerial vacancy." That is Nightengale's opinion on candidates, not a report that Houston has contacted them.

Chandler Rome of The Athletic was first to post that the club had hired Flores, [at 7:17 p.m. CT](https://x.com/Chandler%5FRome/status/2116323727705313687?ref=crawfordboxreport.com), minutes after Rome, Katie Woo and Ken Rosenthal had [reported](https://x.com/Chandler%5FRome/status/2116322415265685923?ref=crawfordboxreport.com) he had emerged as a serious candidate with Matt Kleine in limbo.

## Our take

Opinion follows. Flores is a logical hire if Crane wanted a first-time GM with a long scouting resume rather than another big-market executive brand. The Cardinals draft hits listed above are real and sourced; they are not a guarantee he will rebuild Houston's pipeline on the same timeline. His St. Louis title was amateur and pro acquisition, so expect draft and trade work to get as much attention as big-league free agency. The urgent work is narrower: name a manager, then walk into free agency and the Las Vegas meetings with a plan. Monday's press conference should clarify how Flores and Crane will split decisions. Until then, read the hire as a bet on acquisition process, not as a finished offseason strategy.

## Around the MLB

- **D-backs hiring Ben Fritz as pitching coach:** Arizona is taking Padres bullpen coach Ben Fritz for its pitching coach job, Dennis Lin of The Athletic reported, [per MLB Trade Rumors](https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2026/10/diamondbacks-to-hire-ben-fritz-as-pitching-coach.html?ref=crawfordboxreport.com). The Diamondbacks parted with Brian Kaplan earlier this month. Fritz, 45, has been San Diego's bullpen coach since 2020 and briefly served as pitching coach in 2021 after Larry Rothschild was fired.
