Milwaukee Brewers executive Matt Kleine "is the focus of the Astros' GM search," and while "no deal has been finalized or agreed upon," he "is the Astros' choice," The Athletic's Chandler Rome [reported on X](https://x.com/Chandler%5FRome/status/2115821881030738329?ref=crawfordboxreport.com) Thursday at 10:03 a.m. CT, citing multiple sources. Rome linked [his Athletic story](https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/7712356/2026/10/29/brewers-matt-kleine-astros-gm-candidate/?ref=crawfordboxreport.com) on the report; the piece is paywalled.

The timing matters. Milwaukee's season ended Wednesday night when the Brewers beat the Tampa Bay Rays 4-1 in Game 5 at Tropicana Field to win the World Series 4-1, the franchise's first title, [per USA Today's Bob Nightengale](https://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/mlb/columnist/bob-nightengale/2026/10/28/milwaukee-brewers-win-world-series-first-time-rays-parade/92489772007/?ref=crawfordboxreport.com) and [MLB's announcement](https://x.com/MLB/status/2115643108608061510?ref=crawfordboxreport.com). That closes the calendar wrinkle that had complicated any move for a Brewers executive while Milwaukee was still playing.

## Who Kleine is, and how he got here

Kleine is Milwaukee's assistant general manager. USA Today's Bob Nightengale [first reported](https://x.com/BNightengale/status/2112553268039803326?ref=crawfordboxreport.com) Oct. 20 that he had emerged as a serious candidate ([our earlier story](https://www.crawfordboxreport.com/brewers-assistant-gm-matt-kleine-emerges-as-serious-candidate-for-astros-gm-job/)). MLB.com's Brian McTaggart [wrote Oct. 21](https://www.mlb.com/news/astros-general-manager-candidates?ref=crawfordboxreport.com) that Kleine, 40, appeared to be the leading candidate, was in his 20th season with the Brewers, was promoted to assistant GM on Nov. 1, 2023, and interned in the Astros' media relations department in 2007.

Rome's Thursday report goes further than "leading candidate": Houston's choice, with no agreement yet. The Athletic's linked headline frames Kleine as the "focus" of the search, matching Rome's post. As of mid-morning CT Thursday, McTaggart, Nightengale and Milwaukee beat writers Adam McCalvy and Curt Hogg had not posted an independent confirmation of Rome's report.

Houston has interviewed a wide field. Former Nationals GM Mike Rizzo had a formal interview with owner Jim Crane on Tuesday, Nightengale [reported](https://x.com/BNightengale/status/2115142192545083855?ref=crawfordboxreport.com) and McTaggart [confirmed](https://x.com/brianmctaggart/status/2115145532800901202?ref=crawfordboxreport.com). Oz Ocampo interviewed Monday for an assistant GM role, McTaggart [reported](https://x.com/brianmctaggart/status/2115454328375029891?ref=crawfordboxreport.com), after Francys Romero [first noted](https://x.com/FrancysRomero/status/2115441886341083476?ref=crawfordboxreport.com) a front-office executive interview. For every reported name, see our [Astros GM search tracker](https://www.crawfordboxreport.com/astros-gm-search-josh-barfield-and-randy-flores-join-matt-kleine-among-outside-candidates/).

Nothing is official until the club announces a hire. Rome's sourcing is clear that a deal is not done.
