Yainer Díaz is the Astros' catcher of the present. Who catches when he doesn't is one of the quieter, more consequential questions facing Houston's next front office. As the Houston Chronicle's Matt Kawahara put it in his latest roster analysis, Christian Vázquez's impending free agency "creates a vacancy to address" ([Houston Chronicle via Yahoo](https://sports.yahoo.com/articles/back-yainer-diaz-catcher-houston-120000463.html?ref=crawfordboxreport.com)).

## A true tandem

Díaz was the primary catcher, but a six-week oblique injury meant Vázquez made just two fewer starts. Together they started all but 10 games. As a group, Astros catchers ranked 17th in OPS and were worth 1.6 bWAR (19th) and 1.7 fWAR (21st).

## Díaz's bat came alive

After a .688 OPS before the break, Díaz posted an .850 mark after it and hit .364/.394/.626 over his final 28 games. Among catchers with 200 or more plate appearances, he ranked fourth in average (.282), seventh in slugging (.475) and 11th in wRC+ (116).

## Vázquez's glove filled the gap

Defensively, the two split apart. Díaz finished at -7 Defensive Runs Saved, tied for fourth-worst among catchers, with -4 framing runs. Vázquez was +6 DRS with +6 framing runs, tied for fifth, and caught his 1,000th career game at 35\. Houston went 45-30 in Vázquez starts and 34-43 in Díaz starts.

## The running game improved

Houston threw out 25% of base stealers, up from 16% in 2025, when it ranked 29th and allowed 157 steals. Vázquez threw out 25%, Díaz 18%.

## The Schiavone wild card

Jason Schiavone became the first minor-league catcher since 1981 with a 30-homer, 30-steal season, posting a .922 OPS while climbing from High-A to Triple-A. He was named the organization's minor league player of the year, but he has caught just 49 games above A-ball, and Houston's recent stance that prospects need everyday at-bats would seem to rule out a traditional backup role, though a new GM and manager could change that. Behind him, 2024 first-rounder Walker Janek hit .230 with a .643 OPS at Double-A in an injury-shortened year.

## The money

Díaz won his arbitration hearing last winter at $4.5 million. MLB Trade Rumors projects $6.3 million for 2027, and he's two seasons from free agency. Vázquez signed a minor-league deal this spring and will be a free agent again.

## Bottom line

César Salazar wasn't trusted with the backup job this spring, and Collin Price has played only seven MLB games. Kawahara argues a veteran like Vázquez or Victor Caratini "makes sense regardless." Whoever takes over baseball operations, a defense-first partner for Díaz looks like a must.
