The Astros are acquiring right-handed reliever Evan Reifert from the Tampa Bay Rays for cash considerations, according to multiple reports Saturday night. Neither club had posted an official announcement as of late evening.

Robert Murray of FanSided first reported the deal at 8:36 p.m. CT, writing that Houston was acquiring Reifert, 27, who posted a 2.48 ERA in 46 Triple-A appearances with Tampa Bay this season. Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times followed at 8:57 p.m. CT, saying the return is cash and describing Reifert as a potential 40-man roster add and one fewer Rule 5 protection decision for the Rays. Charlie Wright of MLB Trade Rumors wrote it up at about 8:39 p.m. CT, citing Murray and noting Reifert is still seeking his first major league chance.

The numbers check out on Baseball Reference. At Triple-A Durham in 2026, Reifert went 6-2 with a 2.48 ERA in 46 games (three starts), striking out 81 and allowing 37 hits in 58 innings. He has not appeared in a major league game.

Reifert was a 30th-round pick of the Texas Rangers in 2018 out of North Iowa Area Community College but did not sign, per Baseball Reference and MLB Trade Rumors. He signed with the Brewers as an undrafted free agent in 2020, then went to the Rays in November 2021 in the trade that sent infielder Mike Brosseau to Milwaukee, per MLB.com and MLBTR. Washington selected him fifth in the 2024 Rule 5 Draft and returned him to Tampa Bay before Opening Day 2025, per MLBTR.

The move comes one night after Houston hired Randy Flores as general manager. It is the first reported player acquisition of the Flores era.

Our take

Cash for a strikeout-heavy Triple-A arm with no big league innings is a low-risk depth add. Topkin's Rule 5 framing fits: Reifert was already a 40-man candidate for Tampa Bay, and Houston can decide whether to protect him this winter or risk another Rule 5 selection.
